Like many of the Blips, this was written from a GPS location, used as a writing prompt. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

This one got me thinking about issues or privacy and what it actually means, in a world where every word you speak in private is recorded by the technology around you. Is privacy a right or is something that you earn?
And what better way is there to discuss this delicate topic than by writing a silly short story about a man in a toilet? <\/span><\/span><\/blockquote>

She sat down in a hard wooden chair and the metal legs scraped noisily along the tiled floor.<\/p>

The room was small and impersonal and the lighting was far too harsh. When it closed, the door did so with a very secure latch and left no doubt in your mind that you weren\u2019t getting out. Fortunately, she was a lawyer and was free to come and go as she pleased, but just being in there always filled her with a mild sense of dread, as if something was crawling around in her mind, hunting down her own sense of guilt.<\/p>

She had mentioned all this to a friend one night, during drinks after work, and they had laughed about it. Her friend, a more experienced legal representative had told her that, as a lawyer there was plenty of things on their minds to be guilty about, but, also as a lawyer, they didn\u2019t really feel guilty about any of it.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m here to represent you, Mr Mann,\u201d she said with a sigh. She hadn\u2019t had the fortune to meet him before and her first impression wasn\u2019t entirely positive. \u201cI\u2019m working Pro Bono for the under-privileged, and I\u2019ve selected your case.\u201d In fact, she had simply asked for the simplest one. She didn\u2019t feel guilty about that at all.<\/p>

He was hunched over the table that stood between them, and there was a faint aroma of something that her brain could only apply the tag \u2018apathy\u2019 to, since he smelt, for all intents and purposes, of a complete lack of personal attention. His clothes visually screamed it out, in case anyone\u2019s nostrils didn\u2019t receive the message His shirt was vaguely cream-coloured but might not have been white at some point; it just as likely may have been. It had a yellow stain running across the left shoulder that appeared to be in just the right place where you would expect it to be if he had leaned over and wiped his nose on it. She felt unpleasantly certain that this was exactly what had happened. She wouldn\u2019t be touching this appalling man, she decided.<\/p>

His hair was closely cropped in some places, less closely cropped in other, and faded from dark brown to grey around the sides. His face was beset with deep lines and his face had the rugged quality of a sun-bleached gravel path.<\/p>

He grinned, flashing a set of yellowing teeth at her. \u201cI was arrested,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything wrong, so this should be an easy case for you.\u201d<\/p>

She rolled her eyes and snapped open the brass locks of her expensive, tan leather briefcase. \u201cQuite,\u201d she said, pulling out his arrest report. She paused briefly to run her eyes over it. \u201cIt says here that you were arrested installing a camera in a public toilet.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cExactly,\u201d he said, nodding in agreement. Clearly, inside his head, this was all perfectly fine.<\/p>

\u201cThe report states that when the police entered your house, they found over two hundred videos of people in toilets,\u201d she said. She felt herself sighing inwardly, and cringing a little bit too. This was going to be another weird one, she thought. He certainly looked the part. But, if her career was to progress, then this had to happen. Sleeping with her boss certainly hadn\u2019t helped.<\/p>

\u201cExactly,\u201d he said again, but slightly more darkly. \u201cThey had no right to enter my house.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThey did have the legal right,\u201d she told him. \u201cYou\u2019d been arrested and changed with several offences, and the suspicion of several even more serious ones.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThen the law is wrong,\u201d he said, narrowing his eyes beneath a pair of bushy, unkempt eyebrows.<\/p>

\u201cSometimes,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut, in a case where a man is discovered putting up surveillance cameras to watch people in toilets, I think the law is probably largely correct.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI disagree,\u201d he said firmly.<\/p>

She sighed to herself and wished she was in a bar, sipping a cocktail and telling this story to friends, rather than being in the immediate vicinity of someone who was very slowly making her regret her ability to draw breath. She said, \u201cI\u2019m not saying that I don\u2019t care what you think, just that that would likely be the judge\u2019s position. You see, it doesn\u2019t matter what you think about the law, it only matters about<\/i> the law, and when you take videos of people in toilets, you\u2019ve broken the law. I think that\u2019s pretty clear.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cHow?\u201d he said with a sickening smile and she found herself presuming he was single. She checked the form to confirm it because, for some reason, she found the question fascinating.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s not legal to take videos of people on the toilet!\u201d she told him with a frown. \u201cEveryone knows that.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cIt was a public toilet,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\u201cYes,\u201d she admitted with a grumble, \u201cBut a public toilet doesn\u2019t mean you can come and take pictures of people using it. It means it\u2019s free for anyone to use.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cExactly,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how I use a public toilet. I take videos.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI think the intention is that you use it as<\/i> a toilet,\u201d she huffed indignantly.<\/p>

\u201cWell that doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d he said with a cruel little laugh.<\/p>

\u201cWhat?\u201d she snapped in surprise.<\/p>

\u201cWell it\u2019s not that I don\u2019t care what you think,\u201d he began sarcastically, \u201cit\u2019s just that we\u2019re discussing the law here and what you consider the intention to be doesn\u2019t really come into it. It\u2019s about the fact that the toilets are public, and not private.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make any sense,\u201d she said and then frowned. \u201cWait, what do you mean? All toilets are private!\u201d<\/p>

\u201cPublic toilets aren\u2019t!\u201d he told her. He sat back and looked thoughtfully up to the ceiling, huffing to himself. \u201cHave you ever been having a conversation at a bar when someone comes over and listens in?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWhat?\u201d she said, a smile cracking on her lips at the ridiculousness of his logic. \u201cIt\u2019s hardly the same thing.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cBut you know the situation, where some self-righteous person will suddenly say, \u2018excuse me, this is a private conversation\u2019, ignoring the fact that they chose to have it in the middle of a public place,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\u201cYes!\u201d she scowled. \u201cDon\u2019t tell me you do that too?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d he grinned. \u201cI didn\u2019t get arrested for it.\u201d<\/p>

She rolled her eyes.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s the same with toilets,\u201d he told her. \u201cYou see, when you get right down to it, all of your actions are in the public domain. It\u2019s even more true if the action is done in a public place.\u201d<\/p>

She narrowed her eyes at him. \u201cDon\u2019t be ridiculous,\u201d she said, allowing herself, against her better judgement, to be drawn into his nonsense. \u201cIf a person was making love, for instance, that\u2019s a private thing. You have no right to know anything about it.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYou\u2019re being ridiculous!\u201d he told her with a slightly smug smile. \u201cWhat if they\u2019re having sex in public, down a alley behind a pub. I didn\u2019t get arrested for that, either, before you ask.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWell that\u2019s their own business!\u201d she told him firmly, as her temper began to fray and her frustration grew to replace it. The image in her mind sickened her, especially since it reminded her of the promotion she hadn\u2019t been offered.<\/p>

He laughed and it was the sound of a fluffy, beautiful puppy with the sweetest fur and big, round eyes gazing at her with innocent wonder, being shoved feet-first into a wood-chipper.<\/p>

\u201cWhat a load of crap,\u201d he said as his laughter trailed off.<\/p>

She was so angry that her words temporarily escaped her.<\/p>

He continued, \u201cIf people are having sex in public, they can actually be arrested for it, can\u2019t they? It\u2019s actually classed as \u2018public indecency\u2019 and that\u2019s a crime, right?\u201d<\/p>

She frowned deeply, highly offended that he was undeniably correct. Rather than admit that, or that she herself had been guilty of it, she said, \u201cHave you indecently exposed yourself too?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cOf course not,\u201d he told her. \u201cI\u2019m a very private person.\u201d<\/p>

She gave him a sneering smirk and said, rather unnecessarily proudly, \u201cThen why do you insist on stealing the privacy of others by recording them in a public toilet?\u201d<\/p>

He gazed back with an even expression. He said simply, \u201cBecause it\u2019s public.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYou really don\u2019t see what you\u2019ve done wrong, do you?\u201d she said, not wanting to get any further drawn into a pointless debate.<\/p>

\u201cExplain it to me,\u201d he said with a grin.<\/p>

\u201cYou\u2019ve recorded people during a private, vulnerable moment,\u201d she snapped.<\/p>

\u201c\u2026 in a public place.\u201d<\/p>

She rolled her eyes at this impossible man. \u201cThere were locked doors between you and the people using the toilets. Didn\u2019t that tell you something?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYes!\u201d he said, nodding as if she was finally catching on. \u201cIt told me that they didn\u2019t expect any real privacy. They were behind a door with a gap at the top and bottom and were right next to other people, separated only by a thin sheet of wood. The lock would have broken if someone pushed against it, so the only reason nobody would have seen what they were doing is if nobody chose to<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>

She shook her head in dismay. How could he be so horribly adjusted, she wondered to herself.<\/p>

\u201cCan you tell me why you did it?\u201d she said, hoping to get this over with as quickly as possible.<\/p>

\u201cNo,\u201d he said firmly. \u201cThat\u2019s private.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWhat?\u201d she cried out. \u201cThat\u2019s<\/i> private? You\u2019re seriously telling me that you think your reasons are more private than the poor man who was taking a dump?\u201d<\/p>

He grinned widely. \u201cOf course!\u201d<\/p>

She looked at the arrest record for a moment. The victim was a quite handsome man, but he was certainly at a disadvantage with his pants around his ankles and an expression on his face like he had just found out that his puppy had died and, as a consequence, his wood-chipper needed cleaning.<\/p>

She just shook her head at all this. It was a case that meant nothing, and the meeting should have ended. She decided it was time for that to happen.<\/p>

It seemed he felt otherwise. \u201cYou see, the reasons I do things, the thoughts inside my head are the only things that are really private,\u201d he told her. \u201cWhat actions I take, the things that I do, anyone can see those. I can\u2019t control who sees me doing what, and don\u2019t have any control how they feel about it. What I can control, and what is only my business and nobody else\u2019s, is what goes on inside my head. Nobody can see that, so that\u2019s entirely mine.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYou\u2019re insane,\u201d she told him, but frowned curiously.<\/p>

\u201cWill you tell me why you think so?\u201d he said. \u201cWill you tell me why you\u2019re a lawyer? Will you tell me what you think of me?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI think it\u2019s best if I don\u2019t,\u201d she told him.<\/p>

He nodded. \u201cThere is no privacy and there never was. There are only secrets, secrets we trust others to keep for us. We never had any power over our actions and the way other see us. It\u2019s a delusion, if you ask me.\u201d<\/p>

She glared at him. \u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cBecause you never thought about it,\u201d he suggested. \u201cIt\u2019s like internet privacy. People always moan about webistes stealing their information but they know those websites will, and they use them anyway. Privacy isn\u2019t a right, it\u2019s a privilege. It has to be earned.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThe law doesn\u2019t agree,\u201d she said coldly.
\u201cHave you ever thought about it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>

Succinctly, she replied, \u201cNo.\u201d As far as she was concerned, the matter was now closed.<\/p>

\u201cSo you\u2019ll defend me?\u201d he asked.<\/p>

She gritted her teeth angrily. \u201cYes,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s my job.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cAnd you do it for free,\u201d he said. \u201cYou must be a really good person.\u201d<\/p>

She looked at him and narrowed her eyes. She nodded and said sourly, \u201cYes. I am a very good person.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
