This is another GPS story. The location gives me three random words I give myself an hour to turn into a short story. It\u2019s good practice and keeps your creative mind active. This time the words were\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/h4>

Outreach cloaks progress<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h4>

As a teacher myself, this resonated with me. It took me back to when I met a Canadian teacher with over 19 years experience who told us about how education was being systematically undermined. I can see it for myself and decided to write this ugly little story about it. <\/span><\/span><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

He rubbed his forehead and groaned to himself, making sure he did so loud enough for the sound to be annoying. Joe glanced one last time to the report and then back up to an oddly empty expression on the face of his colleague.<\/p>

\u201cAnd this is correct?\u201d he said wearily. \u201cYou\u2019ve actually confirmed that this information is right?\u201d<\/p>

She sighed softly and grumbled to herself under her breath. \u201cOf course I confirmed it,\u201d she told him, sounding like she didn\u2019t enjoy having her professionalism questioned. Her neutral expression melted into an impatient scowl.<\/p>

He nodded and looked away. He could feel the frustration bearing down on him. \u201cI know this guy,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a good man. I had drinks with him a few weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cOh he drinks?\u201d she said sarcastically. \u201cHe must be a good man then.\u201d<\/p>

He glared at her. \u201cI don\u2019t need your attitude, right now, Linda,\u201d he snapped. He glared at her and it was an unusually dark expression that plunged her into silence.<\/p>

Where anyone else might have apologised, she stared back for longer than was polite before looking away in disgust, and making no effort to hide it.<\/p>

\u201cI need you on my side and doing your job,\u201d he told her angrily. He could feel his hands tightening into fists. \u201cThe last thing I need right now from you is another argument about semantics.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cNo!\u201d she told him, meeting his piercing eyes and defiantly gazing into them. \u201cThe last thing we need right now is some idiot making stupid complaints and undoing all the good work we\u2019re trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>

Joe looked away and made an effort to calm himself. He filled his mind with the image of a beach, he could feel the sun beating down on his face, lighting up the inside of his eyelids a bright pink and listened to the imagined sounds of the ocean lapping gently against a sandy shore. He counted down from five and took a deep, heavy breath.<\/p>

Blowing out the air in his lungs, he said, \u201cI\u2019ll talk to him.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI already did,\u201d she sneered. \u201cHe\u2019s an idiot.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019ll talk to him,\u201d he told her. It wasn\u2019t a question and she clearly understood what he meant by this. She bit her bottom lip, looked away and nodded slowly. What else could she do? She wasn\u2019t the one in charge, although he knew that she often forgot that.<\/p>

\u201cFine,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>

\u201cLinda,\u201d he said grumpily, his ragged temper now brought to heel. \u201cHe deserves a conversation with his boss before we get rid of him. Anyone would deserve that.\u201d<\/p>

She shrugged. \u201cHe\u2019s an idiot,\u201d she said firmly. \u201cBut it\u2019s your time to waste, Boss<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI know,\u201d he said with a sigh. He rubbed his forehead wearily. \u201cIt\u2019s not that I don\u2019t trust your judgement, it\u2019s just that I know this guy. I want to give him a chance.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cHe\u2019s had plenty of chances,\u201d she told him. Her temper was under control too and now her voice was calm and even. It was never this calm and even unless she was extremely annoyed about something. He knew her well enough to know that. \u201cI\u2019m not having someone like him shoot his mouth off.\u201d<\/p>

He shook his head and tried not to get annoyed at her. \u201cIt\u2019s not your choice to make, Linda,\u201d he told her equally calmly. \u201cI\u2019m going to talk to him and see what he\u2019s got to say.\u201d<\/p>

She just shrugged. \u201cI\u2019ll be in my office,\u201d she said.<\/p>

He nodded. Without another word she turned and stalked off angrily down the corridor.<\/p>

She was a cold, and sometimes vicious bitch, he thought to himself. Unfortunately, that was exactly what he needed her to be.<\/p>



<\/p>

Chris Stephenson looked up as the door opened. He was a young man, close to the end of his twenties. He was a neat and tidy person who stood up politely as Joe entered the small waiting room. The only thing that pointed to him not being a typical office-worker was a scruffy mop of dark hair that suggested he wasn\u2019t quite entirely conventional.<\/p>

Joe smiled at him courteously and turned to slowly, very deliberately, close the door. He reached down and snapped the lock shut.<\/p>

\u201cMr Swallow,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\u201cJoe,\u201d he told him. \u201cI know I\u2019m your superior, but we\u2019re friends too. I\u2019m here to get your side of all this.\u201d<\/p>

He flashed an uneasy, awkward smile but Joe noticed a very real sigh of relief. He said, \u201cGood. I just need to…\u201d<\/p>

His sentence went nowhere. Joe took the lead and pointed politely to the chair. \u201cSit down please, Chris. Let\u2019s talk this out.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThanks,\u201d he agreed.<\/p>

The two men sat down opposite one another. Between them was a round wooden coffee table on black metal legs that looked too spindly to hold it up.<\/p>

Joe looked at his files in silence and breathed heavily. He knew it was his responsibility to take the lead. With that in mind he said, \u201cChris, we run an outreach program here. We work hard to earn sponsorship so that we can do good work in the community.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYes,\u201d he agreed. \u201cI understand that, Sir.\u201d<\/p>

Joe smiled emptily to himself. No matter how much he\u2019d like this to remain informal, he knew it wasn\u2019t going to be. That made it feel much harder, of course.<\/p>

\u201cChris, we work very hard to get young people like you who can go out and train inner-city teachers,\u201d he said. \u201cWe give them a solid grounding in maths and science so that they can go out and teach the under-privileged community kids. We make a real difference here, Chris. We\u2019re proud of what we do!\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI know, Sir,\u201d Chris said. He hesitated, huffing to himself. He was clearly agitated and he shuffled awkwardly in the seat. \u201cBut something isn\u2019t right.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI see,\u201d Joe nodded along. He hoped Linda was wrong about this. He was such a nice, promising young man.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s all wrong!\u201d he said.<\/p>

Joe nodded and sighed wearily. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong exactly?\u201d<\/p>

Chris nodded to himself. He paused and gazed into nothing as he marshalled his thoughts. After a long moment he began, \u201cAs you know, I\u2019m in charge of writing the curriculum. I\u2019m the one who creates the teaching schedules for the trainee teachers. We take people and give them on-the-job support while they qualify as teachers.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cYes,\u201d Joe said with a weary nod. \u201cGo on.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWell, I\u2019ve gone through the curriculum,\u201d Chris said, getting more agitated.<\/p>

\u201cAnd?\u201d Joe shrugged.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s all wrong!\u201d he said as his eyes widened.<\/p>

\u201cWrong?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cEverything,\u201d Chris said. \u201cAll the things we\u2019re teaching the teachers. It\u2019s all subtly wrong. It\u2019s like we\u2019re not teaching them at all, it\u2019s like we\u2019re undermining logic and reason.\u201d<\/p>

Joe snorted, smiled awkwardly and shook his head. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cTake mathematics,\u201d Chris told him. \u201cWe\u2019re teaching basic arithmetic in a way that makes it confusing, so confusing that it\u2019s actually making our students think they\u2019re not clever enough to learn it.\u201d<\/p>

Joe shrugged weakly at him.<\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019re teaching them that they can\u2019t function without computers, phones and calculators. We\u2019re removing self-reliance from the children we\u2019re meant to be helping,\u201d Chris explained.<\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re doing that, Chris,\u201d Joe told him sadly.<\/p>

\u201cIf we follow this curriculum, we would end up with students who don\u2019t think at all, just blindly trust technology, and authority to do it for them!\u201d<\/p>

Joe flopped back heavily in his chair. \u201cI see,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd this is what you believe, is it?\u201d<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s the truth,\u201d he said, almost crying out in anguish. \u201cI have a degree in psychology and sociology. I\u2019ve gone over and over the course. It\u2019s almost like it\u2019s designed to make the children fail.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cPerhaps this is why the under-privileged are under-privileged in the first place?\u201d Joe asked sarcastically.<\/p>

Chris nodded with more enthusiasm than Joe had wanted to see. He sighed to himself and wearily rubbed his face.<\/p>



<\/p>

Linda said, \u201cI told you!\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI never said you didn\u2019t,\u201d Joe agreed, sitting heavily down in a sofa at the edge of her small, neat and oddly aggressive office. \u201cI just wanted to hear what he had to say for myself.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cAnd?\u201d she asked smugly.<\/p>

He nodded and gave her a measured smile. \u201cHe\u2019s an idiot.\u201d<\/p>

She said again, quite unnecessarily, \u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI can\u2019t have someone like him talking about stuff like this,\u201d Joe said wearily. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to get rid of him.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI told you that too,\u201d she said grumpily. Linda tapped a few keys on her computer. \u201cI\u2019ve already written out the paperwork,\u201d she said with a superior sideways glance at him. \u201cI just need you to authorise it.\u201d<\/p>

He sighed. \u201cSure, I\u2019ll sign off on it.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWhat do you want to do?\u201d she asked conversationally.<\/p>

\u201cJust have him killed,\u201d he said. \u201cNothing fancy, just an accident or something before he takes his ideas to social media any more than he already has.\u201d<\/p>

Linda grinned like a predator spying its lunch. \u201cI already presumed that. It\u2019s ready for authorisation.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWhat an idiot,\u201d Joe said. He took a deep breath and noisily hefted his old, aching bones up out of the chair. \u201cEvery year we get one like him. When will they ever learn to just shut their mouths? They can\u2019t really think they\u2019re going to change the world, can they? They can\u2019t imagine we\u2019d just allow them to go spreading the truth around?\u201d<\/p>

Linda shrugged. \u201cI guess that\u2019s the problem with hiring gifted, motivated people who just want to help others.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI blame the schools,\u201d Joe told her. \u201cAll this thinking for themselves should have been beaten out of them years ago.\u201d<\/p>

Linda smiled at him, almost supportively as he came over to authorise the instruction. She said coldly, \u201cWe\u2019re working on it, Boss!\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
